Fort Mackinac

If you are a History Buff, then a visit to Mackinac Island and a tour of Fort Mackinac is definitely in order. Fort Mackinac is great for a day trip with the Family. There are plenty of Restaurants, Carriage Tours and Sight-seeing to do on the Island besides the Fort, but the Fort, in my opinion, is the center point of Mackinac Island. Bring plenty of money when you visit the Island. Mackinac Island is by no means cheap to visit, but visiting Fort Mackinac itself is reasonable, and the kids will like it too.

Fort Mackinac Highlights

Fort Mackinac was founded during the American Revolutionary War. Originally the Fort was located on the mainland and was called Fort Michilimackinac which is now Mackinaw City. Being vulnerable, the British decided to relocate the Fort to Mackinac Island in 1780. The American's took control of Fort Mackinac in 1796. During the War of 1812, the British captured the Fort and held it until after the War. Fort Mackinac remained active until 1895. There is so much more History that you can learn by visiting, so I will leave the rest up to you to find out.

To get to Mackinac Island you have to take a Ferry. No cars are allowed on the Island, so it is nice that you do not have to worry about traffic. There are Buggy rides and Bicycles to rent, or you can walk and take in the sights. There are several ferries to choose from, and they are expensive. The Buggy rides are expensive too, so bring money.

Fort Mackinac is a very interesting place to visit. There you can see how the soldiers lived, worked, and relaxed. The picture is of the Enlisted Quarters. You can tour the entire Fort and see the Bath Houses, Social Club and many more buildings and rooms and see how the conditions almost as they really were. Outside in the Parade Grounds the mock Soldiers practice drilling in the uniforms of the day, and invite the crowd to drill along with them. Kid's love this and have a ball marching besides these mock Soldiers as they shout orders.

I recommend Fort Mackinac for a nice day trip and for anyone who loves History.
