Madra Rua Irish Pub is located in the North Charleston Historic District on
Montague Avenue. It is a quant little place that is decorated in the
traditional Irish style with dark wood furniture and accents, and booths for
dining in a semi-private atmosphere. Madra Rua also has two sides that
are almost identical. One side is for smoking and the other is
non-smoking. There is also a small patio for dining outside too.
Madra Rua is usually crowded with locals sipping pints and telling stories,
and they are probably the biggest promoter of Rugby in the Charleston area.
If there is a Rugby game on TV, then go down to Madra Rua. It may very well be
the only place in town to see it. They offer several beers on tap and
advertise several Layered Draughts like Black & Tan, Bumble Bee, Black & Red,
and Guinness Snake Bite to name a few. They also have bottled beers and
a full selection of liquors and such if you want a cocktail or a shooter too.
The
Madra Rua Irish Pub menu is full of Irish and English specialties such as
Shepherd's Pie, Corned Beef & Cabbage, and Fish & Chips, but they also serve
burgers, wings, sandwiches, Prime Rib and other American fare too. I
ordered the Fish & Chips. It wasn't quite like the Fish & Chips that
I bought from the street vendors when I visited Scotland and England years ago,
but it was good just the same. I accompanied it with a local Kölsch ale by Coast
Brewery called 32/50 Kölsch. It is brewed here in North Charleston on the old Naval Base, and it is a
very light bodied German ale. My buddy ordered the Special that evening.
It was Grouper with a Lobster and Shrimp sauce. It looked delicious, and he said it
was. He was licking the plate when he was done. Cheryl had the Shepherd's Pie, and she said it was very tasty too.
It is served with a couple of slices of soda bread.
The presentation of the food was wonderful as well. I provided a couple
of pictures so that you can see for yourself. Madra Rua has a different
Special every night, and they are different every week. Overall the food
is very good, and not over priced.
If you like Irish Pubs, Irish food, and Layered Draughts, then check out Madra
Rua in North Charleston. Irish Pubs aren't just for downtown anymore.
