The New Orleans area has three main Casinos not counting the many Video
Poker parlors you can find around I-10. These three Casinos are: Harrah’s New Orleans
Hotel & Casino on Canal Street; Boom Town Casino in Harvey, Louisiana; and the Treasure Chest
Casino located on Lake Pontchartrain on Williams Blvd in Kenner, LA.. I have
visited Harrah’s New Orleans Hotel & Casino and the Boom Town Casino.
Harrah’s New Orleans Hotel & Casino
Harrah’s New Orleans Hotel & Casino is a huge complex with plenty of glitz and
glamour. It is the typical big town Casino like you would find in Atlantic
City or Las Vegas. There are plenty of Casino Slot machines and table games. When I
went there, all of the table games were no less than $10 minimum. Not a lot of
folks were playing the tables (I wonder why). I visited Harrah’s New
Orleans Hotel & Casino twice and played Casino Craps and Casino Slots. Both times that I was there, I never was approached by nor
did I see a cocktail waitress. Pretty cheesy if you ask me.
If you want the Casino experience that overwhelms the senses, then check out Harrah’s
New Orleans Hotel & Casino. It is located by the Convention Center on Canal Street.
Boomtown Casino
I like Boom Town Casino located on the West
Bank of the Mississippi over in Harvey, Louisiana better than Harrah’s . Boom
Town Casino is a Riverboat style Casino that has shops, restaurants and bars and plenty of
Casino Slots and table games. It isn't as big as Harrah’s New Orleans
Hotel & Casino, but there are plenty of Casino Games you can play just the same.
The drinks come much faster than the big Casino and they have $5 tables too. I was
disappointed that there wasn’t a Let It Ride table though.
The first thing you should do when you enter
the Casino (or any Casino for that matter) is get a rewards card before you do
anything else. Just for signing up, they give you things such as match plays on
table games, free drink coupons in the bars, discounts on the buffet, free
stuff in the gift shop and a free $5 chip at the teller. Not a bad deal just
to sign up. Parking is also free.
Getting to Boom Town Casino is a little tricky. I
had a hell of a time finding it. I had to stop twice for directions after missing the
exit once. There are plenty of signs telling you about Boom Town Casino, but only one of them
tells you what exit to take, and that billboard is right at the exit you have
to take and easy to miss.
To get to Boom Town Casino from New Orleans, take Exit 6
at Manhattan Blvd and continue past Manhattan Blvd on West Bank Expressway. Stay in the
right lane. You will be going towards the Harvey Tunnel. Stay in the right
hand lane because the road will fork before the Harvey Tunnel. You want to
stay right and you will come to the intersection of Peters Road. Make a left
on Peters Road, and follow for approximately 4 miles. You will think you are
on the road to no where, just continue on and you will see Boom Town Casino on the
right side.
